| What to Drink While Pregnant? |
|
The
short answer is lots and lots of good liquids and not a lot of the bad liquids.
Yo
u’ll often
hear OB/GYNs saying “you’re not eating for two but you are drinking for two”
which is a nice way of saying that it’s important you keep up your fluids and
keep hydrated.
Not only does water aide in you and your baby’s liver and
kidney function but it flushes out the waste products from your cells. During pregnancy, liquids are also needed for
your body’s expansion as your blood volume increases significantly. Insufficient liquid intake can be a factor in
constipation, preterm labor, miscarriage, and even slight dehydration can cause
or contribute to fatigue. Proper
hydration is also important for adequate breast milk production and flow.
What should I be avoiding?
While some doctors saying “everything in moderation”, the
American Pregnancy
Association recommends you should “Eliminate tobacco smoke,
drug use and alcohol consumption from your diet. Reduce or eliminate caffeinated beverages
(soda, coffee, tea) from your daily intake and maintain a reasonable exercise
program throughout your pregnancy. If
you use artificial sweeteners and are pregnant it is always best to talk with
your care provider on which sweetener you are using and how much you are
consuming.”
A Jan 2008 NPR
article highlights that it’s not just us pregnant women who should be avoiding
the caffeine. A recent medical study
conducted with 1,000 Bay Area women, found that consuming more than 200mg of
caffeine a day can double the risk of miscarriage.
According to Julie Matthews, a leading pregnancy
nutritionist with her own practice in
